Antwerp Coalition Split Over Israeli Flag Display at City Hall
The decision is part of Antwerp’s annual summer protocol, under which flags of countries with diplomatic representation in the city are displayed at the municipal building.
However, the move has drawn criticism from members of the Vooruit party, a coalition partner, who argued that the display sends the wrong message amid the ongoing war in Gaza. Party officials described the decision as inappropriate given Israel’s conduct in the conflict.
Antwerp alderman Karim Bachar said: “We do not want this flag here and consider this a bad signal,” adding that his party views Israel’s actions in Gaza as violations of human rights.
He also said Vooruit had proposed alternative symbols during internal discussions, including the use of a peace flag or the European Union flag instead.
The decision was defended by Mayor Els van Doesburg, who argued that the flag display follows established municipal protocol and reflects Belgium’s diplomatic relationships.
The disagreement highlights ongoing political sensitivities within European cities over symbolic displays linked to the Gaza conflict, which continues to shape domestic debates across several countries.
