Palestine Urges US to Intervene Over West Bank Settlement Expansion

(MENAFN) The Palestinian Authority has denounced Israel’s approval of 2,162 new settlement units in the occupied West Bank, urging the United States to take immediate steps to halt what it described as Israeli “madness.”

“All settlement activity is illegal under international law and does not confer legitimacy to anyone," the authority said in a statement.

According to the statement, the move represents a "blatant challenge to international law and UN resolutions," particularly UN Security Council Resolution 2334, which considers Israeli settlements in occupied Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem, to be illegal.

The authority warned that continued settlement expansion could have serious repercussions, holding Israel responsible for the potential fallout. It said such policies risk driving the region into "further cycles of violence and escalation."

The statement also appealed directly to Washington, calling for swift intervention "to stop the Israeli madness if it genuinely seeks to promote security and stability in the region and globally."

Reaffirming its political position, the Palestinian Authority said the Palestinian people would remain “steadfast on their land and committed to their legitimate national rights.” It added that the latest settlement plans would not alter efforts to achieve an independent Palestinian state based on the June 4, 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem designated as its capital.
