Netanyahu Faces Judges for 83rd Time
Netanyahu faces prosecution across three separate cases that carry the possibility of a prison sentence if he is found guilty. The indictment, filed by the attorney general in late November 2019, has shadowed his tenure ever since.
A public broadcaster reported that Netanyahu had sought to push the session to the afternoon, requesting it not be held in the morning "due to an urgent political and security schedule," without providing further details. He later moved to cancel the hearing entirely, citing unfolding developments tied to Iran — a request the court flatly rejected. Judges instead agreed to a delayed and shortened session, with Netanyahu set to testify for approximately three hours. The broadcaster added that Monday's session had already been scrapped at Netanyahu's request, with Tuesday's hearing only partially modified following a judicial ruling that proceedings would continue for several hours.
The backdrop to Netanyahu's courtroom appearance was one of heightened regional tension. The Israeli military announced Monday its readiness for a potential resumption of hostilities with Iran, following Iranian missile and drone strikes on the United Arab Emirates that left three people injured, according to a statement from the UAE Ministry of Defense.
Netanyahu has maintained his innocence throughout the trial, which began in 2020. Israeli law bars a presidential pardon without a formal admission of guilt.
The three cases — known as "1000," "2000" and "4000" — centre on allegations that Netanyahu accepted lavish gifts from wealthy associates in exchange for political favours, pursued preferential media coverage from a prominent newspaper publisher, and granted regulatory advantages to a telecommunications executive in return for favourable coverage on a major news website.
Beyond the domestic proceedings, Netanyahu has also been the subject of an International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant since 2024, sought on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity in connection with the conflict in the Gaza Strip.
