Another Palestinian dies while held in Israeli prison

(MENAFN) Palestinian rights organizations reported Sunday that another detainee from Gaza has died in Israeli custody, bringing the number of confirmed Palestinian deaths in detention since October 2023 to 87.

In a joint statement, the Prisoners’ Affairs Commission and the Palestinian Prisoner Society identified the deceased as Hamza Abdullah Abdulhadi Adwan, 67, who passed away on September 9, 2025. Adwan, who suffered from chronic heart disease and required ongoing medical care, had been detained at a military checkpoint in northern Gaza on November 12, 2024.

The groups noted that Adwan was married and the father of nine children, two of whom were killed before Israel’s war on Gaza began in October 2023. His death, they said, reflects broader patterns of abuse against Palestinian detainees, including torture, starvation, medical neglect, sexual assault, humiliation, and degrading conditions of confinement.

According to the statement, more than 100 Palestinians have died in Israeli prisons since the war began, though Israeli authorities have officially acknowledged only 87 of those cases. The remainder, rights groups claim, involve enforced disappearances and field executions.

They also pointed to photographs of detainees’ bodies released after the October 10 ceasefire in Gaza, which they say provide evidence of systematic executions.

With Adwan’s death, the number of officially identified Palestinian detainees who have died since October 2023 stands at 87, including 51 from Gaza. Rights groups calculate that since 1967, a total of 324 Palestinians have died in Israeli custody.
