Berlin’s protest condemns suppression of pro-Palestinian voices
(MENAFN) On Wednesday, demonstrators gathered in central Berlin to protest what they described as increasing suppression of pro-Palestinian perspectives within Germany’s academic and cultural institutions.
The rally took place on Jaeger Street in the Mitte district ahead of the Conference of Education Ministers. Participants waved Palestinian flags and held photos of scientists killed by Israel, chanting slogans condemning the German government for supplying arms to Israel.
Protesters called for an end to collaboration between German and Israeli institutions and demanded that Israel cease its occupation of Palestinian territories.
Activist Georg Ismael told reports that the demonstration aimed to pressure science and education ministers to endorse an academic and cultural boycott of Israeli organizations. He argued that Germany’s universities and research centers “legitimize and even encourage apartheid and occupation” through close cooperation with Israeli counterparts, adding that “until Palestinians have equal rights, German institutions should not cooperate with Israeli ones.”
Ismael also criticized what he described as the “widespread and shocking” suppression of pro-Palestinian activists, which has drawn concern from the Council of Europe’s human rights commissioner.
The protest concluded peacefully, though under heavy police supervision.
