Netanyahu Declines Invitation to Gaza Peace Summit
According to a statement from Netanyahu’s office, the prime minister had been invited by US President Donald Trump to join the peace summit held on Monday in Egypt.
“The (Israeli) Prime Minister thanked President Trump for his invitation but stated that he would not be able to attend due to the proximity of the event to the start of the holiday,” the statement explained.
Netanyahu also conveyed his appreciation to Trump “for his efforts to expand the circle of peace - peace through strength,” the statement further noted.
The Egyptian presidency confirmed separately that Netanyahu would not be present at the summit.
Earlier, Egypt had announced that both Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas were expected to attend the conference “to consolidate the ceasefire agreement to stop the war in Gaza, and confirm their commitment to it.”
Over 20 global leaders are anticipated to be present at the Sharm el-Sheikh gathering, which will be jointly led by Trump and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.
Egypt described the summit's objectives as aiming “to end the war in the Gaza Strip, enhance efforts to bring peace and stability to the Middle East, and usher in a new phase of regional security and stability.”
The initial stage of the Gaza ceasefire accord came into effect on Friday as part of Trump’s plan to conclude a two-year Israeli conflict in the region.
