According to a statement from the British premier’s office, Starmer reaffirmed his condemnation of Russian attacks targeting civilians in Ukraine and emphasized the need for efforts toward a just and lasting peace. The leaders also reviewed progress and challenges related to the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, stressing the importance of expanding aid access to affected communities.
On Oct. 8, 2023, Israel launched a war in Gaza that continued for two years, resulting in over 72,000 fatalities and 171,000 injuries, while devastating roughly 90% of civilian infrastructure. The United Nations has estimated reconstruction costs at around $70 billion.
The statement highlighted that both leaders confirmed their shared commitment to fostering stability and peace across the Middle East.
The conversation also addressed the ongoing US-Iran talks in Geneva regarding Tehran’s nuclear program. "Both agreed that Iran must never be able to develop a nuclear weapon, and they reiterated the need to work closely amongst allies and partners to improve regional security," the statement added.
